The first week of Uni is the highlight of the year for many: it can be non-stop partying, meeting new people, and experiencing new things if you do it right!
Freshers' week is organised by the local university student union. The week is hectic and involves the chance to join the many clubs and societies within the university. It also usually offers any of a range of events from live concerts to a formal ball.
You can find out about the events planned in a variety of ways. Most universities and student unions now have websites (they're usually linked). Check here for up-to-date information about what's on. There'll be posters plastered all around the campus announcing events and your new friends will also let you know about things that are happening.
Make sure you keep your Freshers week ID card with you - you will have been given this when you enrolled: without it you won't get into events however hard you plead. One of the best attended events of Freshers' week is the fair. This is a gathering of the clubs and societies of the university. Often held in the student union building, the fair gives you the chance to meet and join clubs as diverse as political groups, music groups, football teams or debating societies.
Alcohol is an inevitable part of student life, especially in Freshers' week. Most students partake (some more than others!) and, if you're one of them, you'll become more aware of how awful hangovers can be.
Tip: There is no magic hangover cure - seriously! A hangover is caused when the body dehydrates. The only way to get back to normal is to drink plenty of water, eat, and give it time.
