Friday tips round-up: Diageo, Lonmin, RSA - ShareCast - Fri 09 May, 07:00 AM
Spirits giant Diageo does not want to be regarded as a defensive stock (a good reputation for now, but not racy enough in a bull market). However, broker Merrill Lynch reckons that is exactly why investors should pile in. A prolonged financial crisis would kybosh the group's defensive qualities, but others will suffer long before Diageo does. Buy says the Independent.

Thursday tips round-up: British American Tobacco, BHP Billiton, International Power - ShareCast - Thu 08 May, 05:56 AM
In the satirical movie Thank You For Smoking the boss of a tobacco lobbyist sums up by saying: "We don't sell tic tacs, we sell cigarettes. And they're cool, available, and 'addictive'. The job is almost done for us." British American Tobacco (BAT) will always have a market and good cash generation, and should rise out a consumer slowdown in the wider market. Buy, says the Independent.

Wednesday tips round-up: Lloyds TSB, Tullow Oil, - ShareCast - Wed 07 May, 07:05 AM
If a high dividend has been the perennial attraction of Lloyds TSB, the credit crunch has also showed that payout to be the bank's greatest protector.

Sunday tips round-up: National Express, JD Wetherspoon, Genus - ShareCast - Sun 04 May, 11:26 AM
National Express trades on about 10 times forecast earnings for 2008, falling to a little over nine times for the following year, which placed them on a discount of about 10 per cent to the rest of the sector.

Friday tips round-up: Rexam, British Airways, Galiform - ShareCast - Fri 02 May, 07:02 AM
Rexam had a pretty disastrous 2007 by its own steady-as-she-goes standards when strikes at its US plants and its unhedged position against surging aluminium prices in Europe led to a 27% drop in earnings.

Thursday tips round-up: Home Retail, Standard Life, Aegis - ShareCast - Thu 01 May, 06:02 AM
Even after yesterday's leap, Home Retail shares trade at nine times current-year forecasts and offer a safe 5.7 per cent yield. Near-term pressures remain, not least from Homebase's operational gearing, but at 264p, the shares are worth buying on weakness, says the Times.

Wednesday tips round-up: HBOS, Game, JD Wetherspoon - ShareCast - Wed 30 Apr, 07:03 AM
A theoretical ex-rights price of 426p based on yesterday's close equates to a new earnings multiple of 6.1 times for HBOS.

Tuesday tips round-up: Stagecoach, Highland Gold, ASOS - ShareCast - Tue 29 Apr, 06:57 AM
One of the main concerns for bus and train group Stagecoach is the seemingly unstoppable price of oil. Even with 95% of fuel costs hedged in the UK for 2008, the group faces an additional £27m bill this year. If spot prices stay at today's level, fuel will cost the group another £27m in 2009.

Sunday tips round-up: RBS, Moneysupermarket.com, Connaught - ShareCast - Sun 27 Apr, 11:17 AM
If there is a silver lining to the storm clouds hanging over Royal Bank of Scotland, it is that shareholders now have the chance to pick up the bank's stock on the cheap. Shareholders should take up their rights, which look a reasonable if not enormously attractive deal, but certainly not buy new shares at this price, says the Sunday Telegraph.

Friday tips round-up: Schroders, Autonomy, William Hill - ShareCast - Fri 25 Apr, 07:01 AM
Schroders shares have rallied by a third since last month's low, largely on relief at the resilience of its retail operations.
