The risk of identity theft in the UK has soared following a colossal Government error resulting in the loss of computer discs containing the personal details of 25 million people.
The two CDs, holding child benefit data including names, ages, bank and address details, were put in teh post by a junior employee from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to the National Audit Office (NAO) on 18 October, but never arrived.
The Government has been slammed for serious incompetence, and Chancellor Alistair Darling has apologised for what he describes as a 'catastrophic' incident.
