PMI rebounds; consumer sentiment falls
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Business activity in the U.S. Midwest expanded in October to the highest
level since September 2008, while the final reading of October consumer
sentiment improved from earlier estimates, though it was still lower than
September.
The National Association of Purchasing Management-Chicago business
barometer rose to 54.2 from 46.1 in September, versus analysts' expectations
for 49.0. A reading above 50 indicates expansion.
The Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers showed its final
index of sentiment for October slipped to 70.6, from 73.5 in September. Overall
consumer confidence remained at its highest level since September 2008, when it
stood at 75. It collapsed to 57.3 in October 2008. This month's reading was
also a touch above the median expectation of 70.0, according to a Reuters
poll.
