LONDON (AFP) - British Airways (LSE: BAY.L - news) said Wednesday it was examining closer cooperation with US carriers American Airlines and Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL - news) but gave no additional information.

"British Airways is exploring opportunities for co-operation with American Airlines and Continental Airlines," BA said in a very brief statement to the London Stock Exchange (LSE: LSE.L - news) .

"Further details will be announced when appropriate," it added.

The announcement followed recent US media speculation that Continental (Frankfurt: A0SLLY - news) was seeking a three-way alliance with American Airlines and British Airways.

BA said last October that it was looking to forge a closer relationship with American Airlines, ahead of the "Open Skies" deal to free up transatlantic aviation that came into effect last month.

The "Open Skies" accord allows airlines greater freedom to fly between Europe and the United States, replacing restrictive arrangements agreed many years ago.
