Intel enlists San Francisco law firm to aid probe
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Intel Corp (NASDAQ: INTC - news) has hired prominent law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP to
investigate alleged leaks of confidential information to Galleon Group, the hedge fund at the center of the largest insider trading ever.
The company's in-house counsel will work together with the San Francisco-based firm, and the chip maker will pass along any relevant information unearthed to government investigators, Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said on Thursday.
He declined to give specifics about the upcoming probe.
Federal prosecutors have charged Rajiv Goel, managing director at Intel Capital, with leaking information to Galleon billionaire co-founder Raj Rajaratnam. Goel has been placed on administrative leave.
'We are looking into those charges and anything else that may be appropriate,' Mulloy said. 'It is potentially a very serious matter, and we are taking it seriously.'
Another Intel employee, Roomy Khan, has previously been accused of leaking sensitive information to Galleon as far back as 1998, according to a criminal complaint filed in 2001.
Federal prosecutors have said that the Galleon insider-trading scheme yielded a profit of more than $20 million.
