Many U.S. airlines are reporting quarterly losses of hundreds of millions
of dollars because of losses in their fuel hedging programs.
On Thursday, Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL - news) , US Airways Group,
JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU - news) and Alaska Air (NYSE: ALK - news) all reported losses, with
weakness coming in part from volatile fuel prices, which tumbled 75 percent in
the second half of the year.
The AMEX Airline Index dropped 2.4 percent to 21.73 on Thursday.
