Japanese inflation slows sharply as economy cools
TOKYO (AFP) - Japanese inflation slowed sharply in December as energy prices cooled and domestic demand weakened due to the country's first recession in seven years, official figures showed Friday.
Core (Berlin: LJ1.BE - news) consumer prices rose 0.2 percent in December from a year earlier, slightly less than expected.
Prices rose for a 15th straight month year-on-year, but at a much slower pace than the 1.0 percent increase seen in November. Core inflation peaked at 2.4 percent in July and August last year.
Core consumer prices in Tokyo, a leading indicator released earlier than figures for the whole of Japan, rose 0.5 percent in January from a year ago, after a 0.8 percent increase in December, the government said.
