The storms that wreaked havoc across Britain in January, not only left thousands devastated, but sent insurance claims soaring to £1 billion. If scientists and environmentalists are to be believed, the effects of global climate
change are only set to get worse, yet research from Abbey found over a third of all households still don't have buildings and contents insurance. Worse still, many people are paying out for policies that won't provide sufficient cover in the event of a claim.

High winds, swelling rivers, freezing temperatures, even tornadoes - with so much potential for disaster it's crucial to get adequate protection for your home. Start by checking your insurance is up to date, or shop around for a comprehensive policy specific to the needs of your property. Check the small print for exclusions. Some home insurance policies, for example, cover broken and lost roof tiles, but not for damage caused by leaks as a result. Outside space such as gardens and sheds is often not covered as standard.

If you've had the same policy for a while, check the level of cover is still adequate. According to the Association of British Insurers, more than half a million homes are now at high flood risk, up more than 100% in the last five years. Norwich Union says that the average flood claim costs between £30,000 and £40,000. Call Floodline (0845 988 1188) or visit Environment Agency where there is an updated list of the areas most at risk.

Shop around for a competitive policy, but don't cut corners to get cheaper deals - it'll cost you more in the long run. Increasing your voluntary excess will reduce your premiums - but be sure you can afford to pay it in the event of a claim.
