Supermarket Asda to create 7,000 jobs
LONDON (AFP) - Asda (NYSE: WMT - news) , the supermarket chain owned by the world's biggest retailer Wal-Mart Stores, said on Wednesday it planned to create 7,000 jobs during 2009.
"This year we will create 7,000 new jobs at a time when many companies are having to lay people off," Asda chief executive Andy Bond said.
"We will also be helping 3,000 long-term unemployed get back into work by specifically targeting them for existing vacancies in our business."
Asda said it planned to open 14 new stores this year and expand 15 existing sites in Britain, which is in recession for the first time since 1991.
Thousands of jobs have been lost in recent months as the slump bites.
