Unilever, Procter and Gamble in British consumer watchdog probe: report
LONDON (AFP) - Two giant household products firms were contacted by Britain's consumer watchdog over a probe that also includes four of the country's biggest supermarket chains, the Financial Times said Monday.
According to the business daily, which quoted a Procter and Gamble spokesperson, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) paid a visit to the US multinational on Thursday, while Anglo-Dutch rival Unilever (LSE: ULVR.L - news) and chocolate bar seller Mars received letters on Friday from the OFT to arrange a visit.
The OFT has thus far declined to comment on the inquiry, but the Financial Times said it was to do with price-fixing between supermarkets and their suppliers.
Earlier on Sunday, supermarket giants Tesco (LSE: TSCO.L - news) , Sainsbury (LSE: SBRY.L - news) 's, Asda (NYSE: WMT - news) and Morrisons confirmed in statements that investigators from the OFT had been to their offices and that they were cooperating.
The FT said, citing a person familiar with the situation, that Anglo-Dutch consumer goods giant Reckitt Benckiser (LSE: RB.L - news) was also on the list of suppliers under scrutiny by the OFT.
