BSkyB blasts watchdog's pay-TV overhaul plans

LONDON (AFP) - British pay-TV giant BSkyB (LSE: BSY.L - news) on Friday blasted regulator Ofcom's plans to overhaul the sector and force it to sell on exclusive coverage of sports and movies at set prices to rival broadcasters.
Ofcom, a communications watchdog, argued in a report published on Friday that there was a "restricted distribution" of BSkyB's premium sports and movies channels.
"We disagree fundamentally with Ofcom's approach, analysis and conclusions," a Sky spokesman said in response.
"In light of Ofcom's determination to pursue its preferred outcome, we will use all available legal avenues to challenge this unwarranted intervention."
However, Ofcom added that it was seeking to ensure a level playing field in terms of competition.
"Ofcom believes that requiring Sky to make its premium channels available to other retailers on a wholesale basis is the most appropriate way of ensuring fair and effective competition," the report said.
"It is therefore also consulting on proposals to put in place a wholesale must-offer obligation, containing a range of regulated prices.
BSkyB currently sells on its premium coverage to British digital broadcaster Virgin, which has accused BSkyB of charging it too much for its content, such as live English Premier League football.
