Finnish unemployment rises to 8.8 percent in April
HELSINKI (AFP) - Finland's unemployment rate rose to 8.8 percent of the labour force in April from 8.3 percent a month earlier, the national statistics agency said Tuesday.
A year earlier the jobless rate for April was 6.2 percent, Statistics Finland said in a statement, noting the number of people out of work last month increased by 68,000 year-on-year to 233,000.
Finland's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 8.2 percent compared to 7.6 percent a month earlier.
Some 2.4 million Finns out of the country's population of 5.3 million had a job last month, down by 2.8 percent from April 2008, the agency said.
Among people aged 15 to 24, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate grew in April to 18.5 percent, up from 17.5 percent in March.
The agency noted that at the end of spring the number of jobless young people increases as studying ends and many are looking for summer jobs.
As a result of the global financial crisis, many Finnish companies have temporarily laid off employees owing to weakening demand for their products.
The ministry of employment and the economy said in a separate statement it estimates around 90,000 employees were temporarily laid off in April.
