LONDON (AFP) - Indian-owned steel group Corus is to axe around another 2,000 jobs in Britain, reports said on Thursday.

Corus refused to comment on the matter, reported by the BBC, Sky News television and Britain's main news agency, the Press Association, citing sources.

Union leaders described the reports as "devastating news."

John Wilson, an official for the GMB union said "this is seriously bad news, especially coming on top of the earlier job cuts. We will be seeking urgent talks with the company."

Corus, owned by India's Tata Steel, announced in January plans to cut 3,500 jobs worldwide, including 2,500 in Britain, following a strategic review sparked by the global economic downturn.

Meanwhile, nearly 2,000 further Corus jobs are at risk at one of Britain's biggest steel plants after four major international buyers recently pulled out of a contract.

The future of the Teeside Cast Products plant in Redcar, northeast England, is currently being discussed by management.
