Deutsche Telekom 'to merge fixed, mobile units'
BERLIN (AFP) - Europe's biggest telecommunications operator, Deutsche Telekom (Xetra: 555750 - news) , plans to merge its shrinking fixed-line unit with its mobile operations, following the example of Swisscom (Virt-X: SCMN.VX - news) , a press report said Wednesday.
Deutsche Telekom was expected to reorganise its operations according to geographic zones but not cut jobs, the Financial Times Deutschland said, citing sources close to the company.
Germany's historic telecoms operator has lost fixed-line customers on a regular basis for several years, and its fixed and mobile operations account for around half of annual sales of 60 billion euros (77 billion dollars), the report said.
According to the business daily Handelsblatt, Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile units abroad would remain independent, however
Deutsche Telekom declined to comment on the reports when contacted by AFP.
