British economy shrinks 0.8% in second quarter

LONDON (AFP) - The recession-mired British economy shrank 0.8 percent during the second quarter of 2009 compared with the first three months of the year, official data showed Friday.

The Office for National Statistics added in a statement that the economy contracted by 5.6 percent in the second quarter on a year-on-year basis, which was the largest contraction since records began in 1955.
