Dow tops 9,000, Wall Street cheers earnings, housing

NEW YORK (AFP) - A powerful rally on Wall Street lifted stocks to their highest levels in at least eight months Thursday after upbeat housing data and a strong day for corporate earnings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average vaulted above 9,000 for the first time since early January, gaining 187.72 points (2.11 percent) to 9,068.98 at the close of trade, the best close for blue chips since last November.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite (NASDAQ: news) extended its winning streak to a 12th session, rallying 47.22 points (2.45 percent) to 1,973.60, a nine-month high.

The broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed to an eight-month peak of 976.27, rising 22.20 points (2.33 percent), based on preliminary closing data.
