European shares hold onto the day's losses as Wall Street opens about 2
percent lower, with investors fretting over corporate profits and outlooks as
the global economic slowdown shows no signs of easing.
At 1446 GMT the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index is down 2
percent at 748.12 points.
Banks lead the decline in Europe. Barclays (LSE: BARC.L - news) , tumbling 17 percent, is
hit again by funding concerns despite attempts by its chief executive to calm
investors. Meanwhile, Fortis (Amsterdam: FORAL.AS - news) warns of a massive loss.
BNP Paribas (Paris: FR0000131104 - news) and Standard Chartered (LSE: STAN.L - news) lose 8.6 and 8.4 percent,
respectively.
