STOCKS NEWS ASIA-Shares to rise on strong U.S. earnings
WELLINGTON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Asian stocks are set to gain
on Friday after a solid round of corporate results on Wall St
lifted hopes of a stabilisation in profitability.
The main U.S. share indices closed as much as 1.3 percent
higher, after earnings from heavyweights 3M Co, AT&T Inc and McDonald's Corp beat expectations.
Financials, retailers and home-builders all gained on
expectations the economic recovery would drive stronger corporate
earnings.
British and European shares closed 1 percent lower, on poor
results from Ericsson (Stockholm: ERIC-B.ST - news) and lower prices for metals and
oil.
Oil prices fell from a one-year high as a rise in U.S.
jobless claims spurred fears of a fall in demand.
Japanese shares are expected to rise on opening, with Nikkei (news)
futures traded in Chicago 85 points above the last
closing level in Osaka.
Australian stocks are also seen climbing, with share index
futures at 4,860, a 1 percent premium to the underlying
S&P/ASX 200 index's close on Thursday.
The U.S. dollar rose across the board as investors bet its
recent slide had been overdone.
