Iceland c.bank asks other c.banks for payment help
REYKJAVIK, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Iceland's central bank said on Monday it had contacted some other central banks and asked for their help in overcoming payment problems between domestic and foreign banks.
'The bank has been in touch with a number of foreign central banks and asked for their assistance by requesting their own banks to use the Icelandic Central Bank's infrastructure to transfer payments to the country,' Iceland's Sedlabanki said in a statement in Icelandic.
The central bank said last week that some payments had been held up as foreign banks were wary of the situation. It said on Monday its request was made 'in case their banks fear they'll be liable in case payments don't reach the right party'.
Sedlabanki said it was doing all it could to solve the problems. 'The bank has set up and activated alternate routes in international payment intermediation, but unfortunately these are sometime slow.'
The central bank said it hoped this effort would bring results early this week to a problem that has been plaguing the country for days. (Reporting by Omar Valdimarsson via Stockholm newsroom) Keywords: ICELAND PAYMENTS/
