German stocks - Factors to watch on Sept 18
FRANKFURT, Sept 18 (Reuters) - The following are some of the factors that may move German stocks on Thursday:
GERMAN BANKS
Washington Mutual (NYSE: WM - news) , the giant U.S. savings and loan company beleaguered by mortgage losses, has put itself up for sale, sources familiar with the matter said.
Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS - news) is considering a merger with Wachovia (AWO - news) or another bank, according to people briefed on discussions.

German mail and logistics group Deutsche Post will lose a tax advantage it enjoys against competitors, according to a new draft law drawn up by the Finance Ministry.

Holger Haerter, the chief financial officer of VW's main shareholder, Porsche (Xetra: 693773 - news) , has raised the prospect of setting up a controlling and profit transfer agreement for VW in a meeting with parliamentarians, the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung reported. A Porsche spokesman said Haerter was only talking about theoretical possibilities, the paper said.
Separately, Die Welt newspaper quoted VW commercial vehicles division chief Stephan Schaller as saying he expected record sales of over 500,000 vehicles this year, although the second half of the year probably would be slower than the first.
