A drop in bearish bets on U.S. health insurers suggests short investors do
not believe that a proposed government-run health insurance plan will come to
fruition, according to research from Data Explorers.
An index of the 18 largest health care insurance stocks shows short
interest has fallen just over 10 percent since mid-June, said Data Explorers,
which tracks stock lending and short interest.
Short investors seek to profit from declining stocks by borrowing shares,
selling them at a high price and then buying them back at a lower price,
pocketing the difference.
'Such a drop in this sector index indicates that the short market does not
believe that the government proposal will become a reality,' Data Explorers
wrote in a research note.
