Insured to drive abroad? By Rachel Williams
If you are heading off on a driving holiday to the continent this summer, be sure to check you're insured. According to research from M&S Money, nearly half of motorists driving abroad don't know if their motor insurance Although third-party cover overseas is included on all UK motor policies, an accident or breakdown on the continent could still be expensive. M&S claims the average cost of breaking down in Europe is £683. A number of motor insurers, including Churchill, Endsleigh and M&S Money include up to 90 days fully comprehensive cover for Europe. However, most drivers will have to contact their insurer and pay an additional premium before they cross the channel, if they want full cover. European breakdown cover According to Defaqto, European breakdown cover will rarely be covered by your motor insurance. One exception is M&S Money, which includes it as standard, but in most cases you'll have to contact your UK breakdown insurer and pay an additional premium. But it isn't just your insurance and breakdown cover you need to think about. In addition to packing your driving licence and insurance documentation, you also need to check the rules with your destination country or risk on the spot fines. In Spain those who wear glasses need a spare pair; you also need spare headlight bulbs and the tools to replace them; two warning triangles and a yellow reflector jacket. Austria requires drivers to carry first aid kits, while in Greece you'll need a fire extinguisher.
