PARIS, Dec 16 (Reuters) - Below are leading stories from French and Benelux newspapers and company-related news which could have an impact on the region's markets or individual stocks.

The Belgian government will launch a two-pronged appeal against a court ruling that threatens to derail a state-led break-up of stricken financial group Fortis, including the sale of assets to BNP Paribas.

KBC

Belgian financial services group will discontinue some hedge fund-related operations and close its Alternative Investment Management unit as part of the company's previously announced cost-savings and review initiative.

KBC said its exposure to the alleged $50 billion fraud by Wall Street trader Bernard Madoff was 'immaterial'.

DEXIA

Franco-Belgian financial services group Dexia (Brussels: DEXB.BR - news) said losses related to the alleged Madoff fraud could amount to 85 million euros, although it has no direct exposure to Madoff Investment Securities.

French Economy Minister Christine Lagarde said the extent of French banks' direct and indirect exposure to the $50 billion fraud allegedly perpetrated by prominent Wall Street trader Bernard Madoff remained unclear and was being calculated.

European new car sales fell 25.8 percent year-on-year in November, the seventh consecutive monthly drop, car manufacturers' association ACEA (Milan: ACE.MI - news) said.
