Michelin to slash more than 1,000 jobs in France
CLERMONT-FERRAND, France (AFP) - Michelin (Paris: FR0000121261 - news) tyre manufacturer is planning to cut more than 1,000 jobs due to the recession that has battered the car industry, union officials said Tuesday.
Le Monde newspaper reported separately that more than 1,500 workers would lose their jobs under a lay-off plan to be announced soon.
Le Monde said 670 jobs would be lost at the factory at La Roche-sur-Yon in western France specialised in high-end tyres and 900 slashed in Roanne, central France, where tyres for long-haul trucks are produced.
Management declined to comment with a Michelin official saying only that the "figures and facilities named in Le Monde are incorrect" and that a meeting was planned with union officials next week.
The lay-offs at Michelin come after rival Continental (Frankfurt: A0XFTR - news) announced the closure of its factory in Clairoix, north of Paris, with the loss of 1,120 jobs, while Goodyear Dunlop has laid off 820 workers at its Amiens plant in the north.
