Portugal to join Renault-Nissan electric car project - report

LISBON (Thomson Financial) - Prime Minister Jose Socrates will soon sign an agreement for Portugal to join the Better Place electric car project backed by Renault SA (Paris: FR0000131906 -
news) and Nissan Motor Co (Berlin: NISA.BE - news) , Diario Economico reported without naming its sources.

EDP - Energias de Portugal SA is already working with other European power companies on the Grid for Vehicle (G4V) scheme to provide a network of recharging points, the business daily said.

Renault and Nissan signed a deal with California-based Project Better Place in January to begin mass producing electric cars. Renault will provide Better Place with vehicles while Nissan, through its joint venture with NEC Corp (Berlin: NEC1.BE - news) , has created a lithium-ion battery pack.

The two car companies together are expected to invest $500 to $1 billion in the three-year car project. Diario Economico did not say how much Portugal may contribute.
