London shares open weaker, as U.S. closes off highs; Barclays rallies on update

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - UK blue chips opened lower, after Wall Street closed well off highs, while Barclays (LSE: BARC.L - news) rallied early on after its in line trading statement offered some relief to investors.

At 8:02 a.m., the FTSE 100 index was down 16.6 points at 6,199.4, while the FTSE 250 (news) index had edged up 1.2 points to 10,276.5.

Overnight in the United States, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 66.20 points to 12,898.38.

The S&P 500 index rose 5.62 points to 1,408.66, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQ: news) index added 1.58 points to 2,496.70.
