London shares close up, boosted by upbeat updates, as Wall St struggles to gain

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Leading shares closed moderately higher, bolstered by a flurry of pleasing earnings reports, which helped to offset declines in the banking sector following Barclays (LSE: BARC.L
- news) ' update, while Wall Street struggled to get off the ground.

The FTSE 100 index closed up 35.8 points at 6,251.8, while the FTSE 250 (news) index ended 63.6 points higher at 10,338.9.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down just 0.2 points at 12,898.2 at the UK close, with the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQ: news) up 6.55 at 2,503.28 and the S&P 500 index added 2.93 at 1,411.59.
