U.S. Senate panel details Geithner's tax errors
WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary-nominee Timothy Geithner recently filed amended tax returns reporting combined additional taxes and interest of $31,536, the Senate Finance Committee said on Tuesday.
The committee said the bulk of the adjustment results from his failure to pay self-employment taxes for 2001 and 2002, when he was employed at the International Monetary Fund. In addition, the committee said Geithner had previously paid more than $16,000 to cover back taxes for 2003 and 2004 after an audit by the Internal Revenue Service in 2006.
The recently filed amended returns covered years 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006, and reflect both a failure to pay self-employment taxes in 2001 and 2002 and a 'variety' of other issues identified during a review of his returns by the panel.
Geithner voluntarily amended for returns for years 2001 and 2002 after President-elect Barack Obama had expressed his intention to nominate him for the top Treasury post.
