Besieged Brown to publish draft UK legislative programme on Wednesday

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - The government will publish its draft legislative programme on Wednesday as besieged Prime Minister Gordon Brown attempts to restore the public's faith in his ability to lead the country beyond the next general election.

Brown is reeling from a series of damaging revelations in political memoirs published last week, heavy defeats in local elections and a simmering backbench revolt within his own Labour Party over the abolition of the 10 pence tax rate.

He also faces the prospect of Labour losing a by-election next week in the Labour heartland of Crewe.

His spokesman Michael Ellam, confirmed the programme would be unveiled in parliament by Brown, adding that ministers had already discussed the document in 'two quite lengthy sessions'.

Reports over the weekend suggested there could be fresh initiatives on health, education and family-friendly policies to bolster the government's sagging image.

Over the weekend serialisations of memoirs by former prime minister Tony Blair's wife Cherie and former deputy prime minister John Prescott claimed in turn that Tony Blair is still advising Brown and Prescott once urged the ex-leader to sack Brown.
