Australia's March housing finance falls 6.1 percent, more than forecast

SYDNEY (Thomson Financial) - The number of Australian owner-occupied dwellings financed in March fell a seasonally adjusted 6.1 percent from February to 59,371, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said on Monday.

The market consensus forecast was for a 1.0 percent fall.

In February the number of dwellings financed fell a revised 6.7 percent from January, instead of

a 5.9 percent rise as initially reported.

By volume, financing deals for the construction of dwellings dropped 4.6 percent to 4,594 and

financing deals for the purchase of new dwellings fell 11.5 percent to 1,981.

Financing deals for the purchase of established dwellings fell 6.0 percent to 52,796, the ABS said.

On a trend basis the number of owner-occupied dwellings financed fell 1.3 percent to 62,920.
