Tokyo shares close notch under 10,000

TOKYO (AFP) - Japanese share prices have briefly topped the 10,000 level for the first time in eight months but closed down 0.1 percent at 9,981.33 on profit-taking.

The benchmark Nikkei (news) -225 index shed 10.16 points after touching a high of 10,022.23 in morning trade, its highest level since October 8, amid mounting hopes for a recovery in world demand.

The broader Topix index of all first section shares edged up 3.64 points, or 0.39 percent, to 940.65.
