US retail sales up 0.5% in May
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US retail sales rose in May, for the first time in three months, fuelled mostly by higher gasoline prices, the government said Thursday amid signs a prolonged recession is easing.
The Commerce Department said sales edged up 0.5 percent in line with expectations, from a revised decline of 0.2 percent in April.
Retail sales is a key component of the US economy which is in recession since December 2007.
