EU says Portugal must re-notify plans for new Lisbon airport after site change
BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - The European Commission said that Portugal must re-notify it of its plans for Lisbon's new 4.9 bln eur airport following a change of site, in order to qualify for EU funds.
A commission spokeswoman said: 'The commission does not have a pre-established position regarding the choice of site, but the decision of whether EU funding is appropriate must be taken as soon as possible if funds from the 2007-2013 round of structural funds are to be used.
'All the usual studies will have to be carried out again for the new location to study its appropriateness,' she added, saying that these included technical, social, environmental and economic studies.
She added that it is up to the Portuguese government to re-notify the commission of its plans for the new location.
Yesterday, Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates said the new airport will likely be in Alcochete, on the south side of the Tagus river, and not at Ota, the site originally chosen by the government.
Socrates said the selection of Alcochete is preliminary, and that a final decision will only be made after a public consultation.
