ArcelorMittal Kazakhstan mine explosion kills at least 7 UPDATE

KARAGANDA, Kazakhstan (Thomson Financial) - A methane gas explosion in ArcelorMittal (Amsterdam: NSCNL0001MT7.AS - news) 's Abaiskaya, Kazakhstan coal mine killed at least seven people, with a further 23 still missing, regional governor Nurlan Nigmatulin said.
'Seven people have been killed, 23 are missing,' Nigmatulin told reporters.
'We don't know what happened to them.'
ArcelorMittal confirmed the news in a later press release, adding that the cause of the accident is not yet known.
Separately, Interfax reported that the Kazakh Emergency Situations Ministry issued a statement saying 195 workers were in the mine during the explosion, which occurred at 9.30 am local time.
The statement also said that 100 miners had been evacuated by 11.00 am.
A supervisor at the mine told the Russian news agency that three seriously injured miners were sent to the Karaganda regional hospital, while the others were admitted to the local hospital in Abai.
The supervisor also said that the explosion started a fire which is still burning.
