Russia will resume gas supply when monitoring starts: Putin

NOVO OGARYOVO, Russia (AFP) - Russia will resume gas supplies to Europe as soon as a monitoring system is in place but will cut it again if it sees any "theft" by Ukraine, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Saturday.

"As soon as the control mechanism comes into effect, we will open the gas system immediately," Putin said after talks near Moscow with Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, holder of the EU's presidency.

"But we will watch how much gas goes into Ukrainian territory and how much comes out. If we see theft and any part of the gas is lost, we will again cut delivery by that amount," he added.
