Administrators say 373 Threshers stores are to close with the loss of 1,738 jobs.

Parent company First Quench fell into administration last month after struggling in the recession.

The firm also trades as Wine Rack, The Local, Haddows, Bottoms Up and Victoria Wine.

It has already closed 100 of its 1,500 Threshers stores.

Its Christmas trading was down with underlying sales falling 3.5% as it struggled to compete with supermarkets.

Administrators KPMG said 247 of the First Quench stores being closed will trade until November 25, while a further 126 are to stay open until December 2.

Joint administrator Richard Fleming said: "Unfortunately, after reviewing the viability of the store network, 373 loss-making stores are to be closed.

"As part of the closure programme, liquidation sales will take place at each of the stores scheduled to be closed with the stock being sold off at a discount from Friday November 6."

Threshers is among a number of retailers trying to persuade landlords to accept rents paid monthly in advance rather than quarterly.

The company says property was its biggest cost.
