About 5,000 British binmen have rubbished the suggestion that bonuses are only for bankers by taking a share in a massive windfall.
The employees of Sita, the third largest rubbish collection operator in the UK, and will share a £2.3m windfall.
They will each get shares worth £500 from Sita's parent company Suez Environment.
In a letter sent to staff group chief executive Jean-Louis Chaussade said: "This plan is being implemented one year after Suez Environment was listed and represents an important stage in the life of the group.
"It's a testament to the importance that I ascribe to sharing the wealth that you yourselves help create through your daily work.
"It is also a sign of the confidence we have in our business model and in our ability to satisfy our local authority and industrial customers on a daily basis."
A spokesman said staff will be able to sell the shares in four to five years time.
Sita UK empties bins and handles recycling in eight counties and a number of London boroughs.
It also runs energy-from-waste incinerators, composting sites, landfill sites and a mechanical biological treatment facility.
In 2006 the firm generated a turnover of £600m.
