European open: Banks and energy firms fall

LONDON (ShareCast) - European markets are losing ground early on Monday, with banks among the main fallers, while falling crude prices are weighing on energy stocks.

Societe Generale (Paris: FR0000130809
- news)
is the biggest faller in Paris after the French banking giant said it expects its second-quarter net income to be "slightly positive."

Elsewhere in the sector, Credit Agricole (Paris: FR0000045072 - news) , Commerzbank (Xetra: 803200 - news) , UBS (Virt-X: UBSN.VX - news) and BNP Paribas (Paris: FR0000131104 - news) are also among the worst performers.

Energy shares, including Total and Eni (Milan: ENI.MI - news) , are lower as an increase in weekly gasoline supplies and a surprisingly big rise in US unemployment last week weighed on oil prices.

Across the markets, the German DAX is down 66 points at 4,641 with the French CAC falling 48 points to 3,070. The Swiss market has dropped 43 points to 5,295.

Porsche (Xetra: POR3.DE - news) dropped after UBS cut its stance on the German sports car maker to "sell" from "neutral."
