LONDON (ShareCast) - The recession continues to wreck havoc in Ireland, sending unemployment in the Republic to 11.9% in June, the highest since April 1996.
Figures from the Central Statistics Office revealed that 418,592 were claiming jobless
benefits last month, nearly twice the figure a year ago.
It now has the second worst jobless rate in the European Union, behind Spain, which was similarly over dependent on property and construction during the boom years.
Unemployment has nearly doubled in Spain over the last 12 months to 18% following 22 consecutive months of falling employment.
Ireland led the eurozone into recession during the first half of last year, ending a decade as the 'Celtic Tiger'.
