European open: Porsche revs up on Qatar interest

LONDON (ShareCast) - European stocks opened mostly higher but the gains were not sustained.

In Germany car maker Porsche (Xetra: POR3.DE - news)
edged higher in an otherwise weak motor manufacturing sector, after the Qatar Investment Authority offered to buy a stake in the company. Volkswagem, which reportedly had its own offer for Porsche rejected, is lower, as is BMW (Xetra: 519000 - news) . Daimler (Xetra: 710000 - news) is moderately firmer.

"We received an offer from Qatar to acquire a stake and take over (the company's) options on Volkswagen (Xetra: 766400 - news) stock," Porsche spokesman Albrecht Bamler said.

The French market is mixed but slightly lower on balance, as investors look to bank profits on the last day of the second quarter.

The rising oil price has taken the air out of the sales of Air France (Paris: FR0000031122 - news) , which joins its German counterpart Deutsche Lufthansa (Xetra: 823212 - news) in the red.
