LONDON (ShareCast) - European markets continued yesterday's slide in early dealings Tuesday, with weak banking shares offsetting strong pharma stocks.
Among the banks, Credit Agricole (Paris: FR0000045072
- news) , Commerzbank (Xetra: 803200 - news) , Societe Generale (Paris: FR0000130809 - news) , Santander (Madrid: SAN.MC - news) and UniCredit (Milan: UCG.MI - news) are all stuck in the red early on.
Peugeot Citroen, Europe's second-largest carmaker, said it expects to post an operating loss of up to €2bn this year, and announced plans to issue up to €575m of convertible bonds.
Across the markets, the German DAX is down 4 points at 4,689 with the French CAC falling 19 points at 3,103. The Swiss market dropped 15 points to 5,295.
On the positive side, pharmaceutical giants Roche (Virt-X: ROG.VX - news) , GlaxoSmithKline (LSE: GSK.L - news) and AstraZeneca (LSE: AZN.L - news) are all going well.
In economic news, the preliminary Markit purchasing managers index rose for the fourth month in a row in June, to 44.4 from 44.0 in May.
