Shares Which Could Thrive as the Slump Continues

By Malcolm Stacey

Hello Crazy Cats,

A boring start to the week. By boring, I mean the Footsie (news) falls. Connected to the Dow as always. Irritating or what?

Still, oil shares are looking good. Speculators are driving up the cost of crude, because it fell so much. They think theyre onto a good thing, though eventually theyll sell – and down will come the price of the ebony nectar, yet again.
Still, what Im going to do is keep all my oil shares for the time being. I expect them to do rather well for the rest of the year. Maybe not, nothing is sure, but its worth a go.

Bank shares are my other big investment. It was a much bigger investment, though, before the spectacular bank crash, which is only about a year old. Im losing patience with these shares. I did expect a fairly brisk recovery. It hasnt come.

Thats probably because the public, and the big traders, have long memories. Theres nothing like getting burned for keeping the brain cells remembering. And staying clear. Eventually, greed will take over from the fear, but its not going to be a quick change. And I think there are better bets out there oil being one of them.

I also like the supermarkets. Theyll do better than most, as the big slump continues, because none of can do without nosh. Also remembering drugs firms for a similar reason. Nobody will skimp on cures and treatments that makes them feel better.

There is also a case for avoiding goods and services that can truly be described as luxuries. For example, I mean holidays, posh clothes and high tech gadgets. Loads of other things will also continue to lose out in the recession. No need to list em. If I fancy a share, I ask if the world can do without the end result for a bit. If the answers yes, Im not buying the shares for a while. Rock on.
