LONDON (ShareCast) - John Lewis managed a small increase in sales last week versus the previous year despite Tube strikes, floods and hot weather.
Sales at the retail chain rose 0.4% in the week ended 13 June to £45.92m, with electricals
& home technology enjoying an 8.2% boost in turnover.
Fashion managed a 0.3% improvement on a year ago, but the home department failed once again, posting a 4.6% decline in sales.
The Waitrose supermarket business continued to flourish, raising sales by 6.1% to £86.17m, with food sales 4.3% higher than forecast and nearly 7% better than last year.
Like-for-like food sales were over 4% higher than forecast and 1% ahead of 2008, meaning cumulative total sales for the year are almost 3% more than forecast and 4.3% higher than last year.
Sales for the Partnership were up 4% to £132.08m last week.
Today’s results follow figures from the Office for National Statistics, released Thursday, that revealed an unexpected 0.6% tumble in retail sales last month.
The recession and fears about job security were also blamed for a 1.6% drop in sales on the same time last year, despite record low interest rates having slashed mortgage payments for many homeowners.
