LONDON (ShareCast) - Tuesday sees updates on two obsessions of the British: shopping and house prices.
The British Retail Consortium's retail sales monitor for May is due to released while the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors publishes
its House Prices Balance data.
The BRC's retail sales monitor in April leapt by an eyebrow raising 6.3% in April from a year earlier, but that sort of improvement is unlikely to be repeated given the sunny weather the UK enjoyed in May.
Howard Archer, chief Chief UK & European Economist at HIS Global Insight, is expecting May's figure to show a 2.95 increase in total sales with like for like sales up 0.9%.
On the housing front, recent surveys point to a tentative recovery in UK house prices. Last week the latest Halifax house price survey showed an unexpected 2.6% rise in May.
The increase came after a 1.7% month-on-month decline in April and was better than the 1% fall analysts had been expecting. In the three month to May, house prices fell by 16.3% compared with last year.
Halifax said the average price of a home in Britain rose to £158,565.
