Thursday's tips round-up: Standard Chartered, Sportingbet, BAE

LONDON (ShareCast) - There may be some volatility ahead for Standard Chartered (LSE: STAN.L - news) , as Questor thinks that global
stock markets may retrench after recent gains, so some investors may wish to wait and see what happens, but Questor is including its shares in the portfolio today. Buy, says the Telegraph.

If the US Department of Justice settlement comes down in Sportingbet (LSE: SBT.L - news) 's favour, the shares will spike and investors that buy now will be in clover: the dividend will start to flow, promises Mr McIver. The Independent thinks Sportingbet is worth a speculative bet, but investors should be aware that it could go horribly wrong. Speculative buy. The Telegraph meanwhile says the stock is worth holding on to.

BAE had a net cash position at the end of last year - compared with net debt positions at US rivals such as Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT - news) . The shares are trading on a December 2009 earnings multiple of 8 times, falling to 7.6 in 2010 and yielding 4.7pc. At this level, the shares are a definite buy, says the Telegraph. Although the Independent thinks the charge of Alterian (LSE: ALN.L - news) will slow, it reckons the shares will tick up in value, which alone should persuade the undecided. Buy.

At 245¼p, or less than ten times earnings, Northumbrian, partly because of its smaller size and relative illiquidity, is also one of the cheapest stocks in its sector. Buy, says the Times (1832.HK - news) . But the Independent says being bearish, it is buyers of the water groups generally, but expects investors to do better from others in the sector, especially Pennon. Hold Northumbrian it says.

Hampson is the world leader in composite tools and will benefit from the shift from riveted aluminium airframes to their carbon successors, but, at 98.5p, down 8.5p, or six times earnings, the shares can be no more than a hold, writes the Times
