Sanofi-Aventis to vigorously defend patent, other rights for Plavix in Germany
PARIS (Thomson Financial) - Sanofi (Paris: FR0000120578 - news) -Aventis said it will vigorously defend its patent and other rights to
its blockbuster blood-thinner drug Plavix in Germany, after Swiss company Schweizerhall Holdings AG said it is close to winning approval from German regulators for a generic competitor.
Schweizerhall has already signed a licence agreement and said it expects sales of its version to start in the current quarter.
Sanofi-Aventis said the drug, also known as Clopidrogel and by the Bristol-Myers Squibb brand Iscover, still benefits from EU regulatory data protection.
Sanofi-Aventis shares fell sharply while Schweizerhall shares surged after the news of Schweizerhall's plans broke earlier today.
