Elia, Vattenfall agree to cooperate on security of supply, renewable energy

BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - Belgian grid operator Elia (Brussels: ELI.BR - news) and German peer Vattenfall AG. said they have agreed
to cooperate on security of supply and developing renewable energy sources.

The two parties have signed a cooperation agreement to seal their commitment.

'This is an important initiative towards a newly competitive market, and fits in the current process of integration of electricity market, at a regional level in a first stage, and towards an effective European energy market in a second stage. It also aims at developing new integration models of the electricity industry,' they said in a joint statement.

The two transmission system operators said they are also willing to contribute to the achievement of climate protection goals defined by national governments and the European Commission, by developing their grids appropriately.
