Canada April unemployment up slightly at 6.1 pct vs 6.0 pct in March

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Canada's unemployment rate edged up to 6.1 percent in April from 6.0 percent in March as the economy created 19,000 jobs, similar to the modest 14,600 increase observed in March. This follows large gains at the start of the year, according to Statistics Canada.

The national statistics agency said unemployment rate increased in April as more people entered the labour force.

Employment increased in accommodation, food services and construction, although manufacturing jobs continued to decline, with the number of factory workers having decreased by 112,000 since April 2007.
