New Year credit card round-up
By Hannah Ricci
If cash flow is tight after Christmas and New Year Eve you're probably turning to your credit card for help. While they're very useful at this time of year, credit cards can be incredibly expensive if you are using the wrong type for your circumstances. Here's a round up of the current best deals to ensure you're not paying more for your money.
If you can't afford to pay off your festive spending in one go transfer your balance free to the HSBC Mastercard, with 0% on balance transfers until February 2008 and a standard APR of 15.9%.
If you're heading to the shops to take advantage of the January sales, opt for the GE Money Transformation from Mastercard which offers 0% on purchases for 12 months, 12.9% thereafter, and 56 interest-free days.
The Post Office Platinum card is top dog for overseas spending at the moment, with an APR of 13.9%, 0% on foreign purchases, and 2% withdrawal fee.
If you're just looking for a good value long-term credit card and don't want the hassle of switching when 0% deals end, go for Halifax's Flat Rate card, which has the most competitive long-term rate at 5.9%. This doesn't offer an interest-free period, however, while Barclaycard's Simplicity card is competitive at 6.8% and offers a 56-day interest-free period.
